Concept 2: Striking a Balance
The second concept provides a balance of programmed and non-programmed recreation opportunities, with a combination of sport-specific fields and natural environments. Play areas for non-organized team sports are grouped together near large multi-use playing fields (for pick-up soccer and football) in the western half of the park. Sprawling, open meadows and wooded groves preserve the regional wildlife in the eastern half of the park. The amphitheater seats face the mountain views to the northwest. The aquatic facility blends seamlessly with an outdoor swimming hole and mountain-like natural environments. The skate park is located at the corner of the site, with its own special setting for viewing this exciting activity. At Commerce Street, a small entrance provides access to a garden, picnic and play area for easy use by local residents. In this concept, approximately 50% of the existing trees are preserved.
